remove additional sql server named instance

Hi
I need to remove an additional named instance of sql server. It has nothing running against it and no user databases have been created on this instance
I intend to use ADD/REMOVE Programs but I am nervous that I will be prompted with a whole series of "such and such file is being used by another program do you still wish to remove" and because we are running an actual default instance used as a live production server (with two mission critical apps) I need to know what the best way to remove the named instance and are there any risks/precautions I need to make before it's removed
Another thing I noticed was that the default instance is 39MB and the named instance is 107MB. Any reason why the big difference in size
Thanks!!
ShelleyAdd/remove programs is the correct way to remove the unnecessary named
instance...
interesting question about the size. I assume you're getting that number
from add/remove? I've never really looked at that info since I would
normally get my sizing info dirrectly from SQL. I would guess that the
difference might come from space used in system databases such as master and
msdb but I really am just guessing. You might look at the size differences
between the system db's to see if that accounts for it...

I wasn't around for the installation of named instance and when I try to start up the service for the this instance I receive the message: Remove SQL Server Instance: Could not start the MSSQL$MCDERMOTT service on the local computer. Error 3: The system could not find the path specified.
So I'm not sure where the 107MB is located either. When I run the add/remove will I be prompted about the deletion of shared files. Should I say 'No' to deleting all of them? I do not want anything to impact our default production instance.
Thanks!

Removal of merge replication.

I've got this SQL2K/WIN2K setup and a database having merge replication
setup. It's been running there for more than couple of years. Now due to
strategic changes we don't need this replication on the database.
When I tried to remove it, it started blocking normal user activity that is
mostly on the same tables which are published. After 15-20 minutes I had to
cancle it. The database is serving 24/7 and I want to remove replication with
minimal disruption to regular opration. Is there any easier way to remove
replication and metadata generated by it.?
I would appreciate any help/pointers.
Have you tried to call sp_removedbreplication? This proc should remove the
replication from the database.

Remoting timeout when calling SSIS package execute from a windows service

When running an integration services package from a windows service I get the "Object ... has been disconnected or does not exist at the server." exception after aproximately six minutes of execution.

This is *not* my windows service failing. I can loop indefinately while tracing to a log file within the service and it will run forever. While calling the mypackage.execute(...) method however, after six minutes (give or take) the exception is thrown...

my code looks something like this:
<code>
dim foo as Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Application
mypackage = foo..LoadPackage(strimportPkgFilename, pkgevents)
results = myPackage.Execute(Nothing, Nothing, pkgevents, Nothing, Nothing)
</code>

<error>
A first chance exception of type 'System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingException' occurred in mscorlib.dll
Exception in: frmMyForm.DoImports
Message: Object '/b76f98a0_5bd9_49d8_a524_eeb49d55b303/bqbhkjnaofq_ifr_cwz+srid_1.rem' has been disconnected or does not exist at the server.
</error>

oddly, this same code works perfectly if I run it within a windows form application no matter how long it takes.

It also runs fine if the package can complete in under six minutes.

Any suggestions?

Mark

To give a little update, I'm still having this problem despite exhausting works around I've come up with.

* I've threaded the call to package.Execute, checking its status in a while loop every 60 seconds until it finishes. Still encounter the exception. This behaves as though it should work. The status and execution appear to work asynchronously.

* I've threaded the call to my service, calling my own status function which tests the status of shared MyPackage, every 60 seconds. Still encounter the remoting exception after ~6 minutes.

Every piece is busy making requests through the whole chain of accessible interactions frequently enough to maintain all known remoting timeout constraints and the problem persists.

It confuses me why the same code works in a windows form, but does not work in a windows service. The exception is defiantly being thrown from within package.Execute. I can loop indefinitely within the service without calling package Execute. I can also catch and disregard the exception and still provide status to the client within the service.

Looking for suggestions...

|||

SSIS does not use remoting. The exception is caused by remoting however, so you need to find out who introduced remoting? My ideas

1) you use remoting as link between client and server - then the exception is between the client and the service, which does not fit with the statement that it is thrown from within package.Execute and you can catch this exception (but did you try?)

2) you create multiple application domains in the service - if you do this, make sure you only use SSIS from default application domain. If you run the package from non-default application domain, some SSIS objects can be created in that app domain, but some in default app domain (a lot of SSIS is native code, and it is not aware of app-domains), which may cause failures like this one.

Remotely installing DSN

Is there any way to install a System DSN to all the pcs on my 2003 network?
(clients running xp)
either by a GPO or something else?]
i dont want to have to go around every pc doing itSystem DSN's are stored in the registry. making it somewhat difficult to
distribute.
You could change ther registry on one computer, save the registry to .reg
file, distrubute to all computers, and execute a custom script to import the
value.
ODBC entries are located in the registry in two spots. Both are under the
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\ODBC
The first is found in the ODBC Data Sources subkey
The second set of registry entries go in the ODBC.INI subkey.
there are applications to help you do this as well...
http://www.freevbcode.com/ShowCode.asp?ID=3369
If it was me I would try my hardest to change the Datasource on the
application level before changing alot of computers.

VBScript to deploy or call from login scripts...whichever.
Take a look at the following example:

I am running SQL 2005 trigger and update the table in remote linked server. This is working perfectly when the firewall is off. However when I turn on the firewall, it wont run any more. Remote view

I was wondering if i should create a lil program that could run in the tray
showing status of jobs running on a SQL server. By that i mean if they are
enabled, runnable and so on. Are there anyone in here that can lead me to
some info related to that? I want to devlope it using C#.
I have been roaming the net for info about this but so far no luck. Is there
an API on the SQL server that enables me to do this?
Best regards
TrondThe SQL-DMO API should give you what you want for SQL7.0 and 2000.
However, DMO is a COM API so you may prefer instead to develop your
application with SMO, which is DMO's .NET replacement in SQL Server
2005.

Remote SQL Trace causing network slowness

Hello!
I was running SQL Trace from my computer (remotely) and noticed that all
activities against this server are slowing down. Queries that normally takes
a sec to execute are taking much longer. Once I stop trace, everything is
back to normal. Local Area Connection graph show network activity under
0.5%.
I have no problems when I start trace locally on the second node of the
cluster (server in question is SQL Server 2005 64-bit /Windows 2003 SP1
Active/Passive cluster). Did someone experience similar problem? What is the
best practices in regards to executing SQL Trace to minimize impact on SQL
server?
Thanks,
IgorNever run profiler on a busy system if you are concerned with performance,
especially remotely. Instead use Trace and send the results to a local
disk. Copy those files to your local server and load them into profiler if
you want to look at them.

Remote SQL Server 2000 Perfmon Not Working

I have a SQL Server 2000 cluster running on x64 OS. I found the threads in the forum to run perfmon locally by using the x86 version of perfmon (mmc /32 perfmon). However, I cannot run a perfmon remotely from another machine and see the SQL Server perfmon data on any of the nodes in the cluster. The remote perfmon picks up all of the other perfmon variables but no SQL.

I found another thread where somebody asked this question but it wasn't answered. Thanks in advance.

Mark

there is no x64 counter.|||Absolutely correct. There is no x64 SQL 2000 counter which is why one must run the 32-bit version of perfmon. I can run the 32-bit perfmon locally on my cluster nodes and see the 32-bit SQL performance counters but I am unable to run perfmon from a remote machine, connect to one of my cluster nodes and see the SQL counters.|||

What do you mean by "remote computer"? Are you trying to do this across the Internet or VPN or what?

Perfmon depends on the "named pipes" protocol and will never work across the Internet because NetBios is blocked by most ISPs.

|||

We are in the process of setting up Operations Manager to collect perf data. Until then we are stuck with a management server that has perfmon running on it centrally collecting data from various servers. I can see other performance counters, just not the ones for SQL Server.

The management server and the SQL cluster are on the same LAN/subnet without any type of firewall between them. I have a test cluster that is doing the exact same thing. Sad

Remote Process of Report

Hi,

We have a reports running in a system in our internal network. Now our requirement is we have to publish the same report into web for the public. How can I do that..?

Note :

I can not install reporting service in my Web server system.

There should be a way to put the report from the reporting server to the web server and display in the webpage to the public.

This is really an urgent requirement.

Are you using RS2005? If so, you can embed the report viewer control into your ASP.Net application.|||

I'm using 2003, Is there any way to do this. My problem is I have to show a report to a website which is running in diffrent system in the same network.

the user will be provided by a hyperlink in the asp.net webpage by clicking the link the user should see the report.

Thanks

Mohan

|||

It is tricky in 2003 without the viewer control.

Your user's won't be authenticated against your RS backend, so you will have to get the contents of the report from within your ASP.Net application. You will want to use the HTMLFragment deviceinfo setting. The trickier part is resolving the secondary streams (like images and charts). You will have to use the StreamRoot deviceinfo to redirect image requests back to your ASP.Net application, so you can make them on behalf of your users.

Both machines CAN access The internet server through ODBC ! (so i dont

I CAN connect to a server on the internet through a local web page on

I think there is a IIS Prob maybe .. Checked iUser Security settings on

I'm having a hard time to understand what you are connecting to. Is
"the internet server" and "a server on the Internet" the same machine?
Where does IIS comes into the picture? (Warning: I know next to nothing
about IIS.)

What error messages do you get?

Could the Windows firewall have anything to do with it?

Port 1433 is the default port used by SQL Server and is the one registered
for use by IANA. You can configure SQL Server to use a different port through
the Server Networking Utility. If you have not done this it will be using
port 1433 (not 1434 as you specified) unless you have a named instance which
will dynamically assign a port and therefore you will need to change this in
the Server Networking Utility to use a specific port so you can set up a
firewall rule.
Clients will normally dynamically allocate a port to use to communicate with
SQL Server (although you can change this behavour using the Client Network
Utility) but the lowest port number will be 1024, therefore they may use any
port greater than or equal to 1024 to communicate with the server. Each
client can choose a different port.
If you are using the default ports you will need to configure the firewall
rules so that server can received SQL Server requests from any port (>=1024)
on the clients to port 1433 on the server, and the server can return any
communications from port 1433 to any port on the client.
Client Port -> Server Port
Dynamic >= 1024 1433
Server Port -> Client Port
1433 Dynamic Port (same port as above)

I'm using SQL Express 2005 for both servers. The firewall is off in both
machines, also, the MSDTS service is running.
Could you tell me if I'm missing something?
Thanks,

Check that MSDTC is correctly configured
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329332&Product=sql
Also make sure that the service accounts for SQL Server is a domain account
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504.aspx#Use_startup_accounts
If you explicitly start a DISTRIBUTED transaction before the statement that
fires the trigger do you still get the error?

You will need to set up specific rules in the firewall to allow this to go
through but not anyone/anywhere else! See

John|||After I read the webpage, I am not sure if I understand correctly, I go to
firewall and add port 1434 TCP. And it didn't work. So I add a port 1040
and this is refered to the "any port" from the document. And still didn't
work. Can you please help? I am really not sure if I understand correctly.
Thanks.

Port 1433 is the default port used by SQL Server and is the one registered
for use by IANA. You can configure SQL Server to use a different port throug
h
the Server Networking Utility.
Client Port -> Server Port
Dynamic >= 1024 1433
Server Port -> Client Port
1433 Dynamic Port (same port as above)

remote instances

config - 2 machines in a workgroup, service running under local system account. Tried the following config. from Rushi. Running profiles on both machines. on source - starts the conversation, and a send. then get an event subclass 2-remote at a periodic interval (in a loop), no activty on the other end. any suggestions
In master:
1. Create master key for database 'master'.
2. Create certificate for user 'dbo' in database 'master'.
3. Create service broker endpoint using certificate created above.
4. Grant connect on above endpoint to the login 'Public'.

In your database:
1. Create master key.
2. Grant send on target service to user 'public'.
3. Create routes to initiator services on other servers.
4. Create routes to target services on other servers.

Now begin dialog with encryption = off and send.
It could be an incorrect address used in the route (a typo in the DNS name), a port number mismatch between the route and the endpoint configuration, a port being blocked by personal firewall, IPSEC blocking a TCP connection etc. What is the value of transmission_status column in the sys.transmission_queue view in the initiatr database?

Have you tried using the service listing stored procs from Rushi's site? They make this kind of tasks much easier.
