I have an ASP page that executes a stored procedure on the local SQL Server instance, but I need that stored proc to execute another stored proc on a remote server. Basically, proc A on server 1 executes and passes a parameter to proc B on server 2. Is there a way to do this without linking server 2?
TIAPlease take a look at the linked server functionality. This allows you to execute a distributed query or call a remote stored procedure.

Remotely accessing database
I'm developing a VB app to manipulate data in a table. I've created an SQL server (local) and have successfully connected to and manipulated data in a database that I created. I would like to be able to run the app on another machine and connect to the same server. I'm having trouble determining what the server name is. Tried a few things but get the "server does not exist" message. Server is set to authenticate SQL server and windows.
Is this happening because my server is (local)? If so how do I change it to permit remote access?
Any assistance would be appreciated.if you have only one sql server in that box, than the default name of the sql server is the name of the windows box. when you try to connect from another box, make sure that the client box has sql server drivers, create a DSN that point to the SQL Server box (using windows server name or ip address), every thing should go fine from there.|||C-Nag

Remote to Remote
Hi,
We have 3 database server . one is local and other two are in two different locations.
Scenario is , we have to import a database from one old remote server to another new remote server.
Since, it should be difficult (bcoz of firewall issues) to import from old remote to new remote server, i thought to
import to my local DB server then import database to new remote server.
I am planning to give IMPORT/EXPORT option in the ALL TASKS property, from my local m/c to the old remote server.
then take BACKUP database in my local machine . After that just copy the backup file to my new Remote server and then
just restore it.
Or is there any better solution to accomplish this ?
Please give me some advice !

In EM under node Remote Servers I see the remote server with the same name
as a local. For example my server name is WP200 and remote server shows
WP200. It is sql 2000. The RCP is checked and map all logins to different
logins selected but there is nothing in the selection grid.
I can't figure out for what purpose it was set up this way.

BOL and the @.LOCAL parameter may help!

Remote SQL Server Access
I'm using SQL Server to store session state. The Sql Server is on the local network but not on the web server. I use impersonation and use account credentials for the ASPNET worker process:

I'm able to access all resources and execute all pages without any problem.
When an object is added to session state I recieve the following error:
"Cannot open database requested in login 'ASPState'. Login fails. Login failed for user 'domain\username. "
Here is my web.config entry for using sql server (with modified connection string of course):

I've checked and given the user i'm impersonating the ability to do everything. I've granted access on all necessary files, added them to the DB and made the user a db_owner of the ASPState table. I can log in to a machine as the user, then access sql server using the windows authentication. I granted 'act as part of the operating system', 'access this computer from a network', 'log on as a service', 'log on as a batch job' on both the remote computer hosting sql server and the web server.
The strange thing is i installed the asp session state tables on my development machine, using the same configuration file to run everything, and was able to add an object to session state without any problem. But when i specify the remote server, i'm denied.
Anybody have an idea?Have you tried switched back from integrated and supplying the said user details in the connection string? Not suggesting that as a solution but just wondering if that works.

I am new with MS SQL Server.
I do not have any problem with my local server but has problem with remote
server.
I am trying to connect my SQL database in my internet site.

What Could be wrong ?

Yes that is the problem "SQL Server does not
exist or access denied"
I did try using DSN , Query Analyzer, SQL Server Manager and all of them
failed for remote SQL Server Instance. For local, I have no problem.
You gave me a lot of information. Since I am new to SQL Server, Let me play
around using SQL Server 2000 for a day or two or probably more. Hopefully
the information you gave will work. I did copy your answer to my notepad and
that will keep me busy for quite sometime.

I did try ping my SQL server , I received ,

What is that means ?
What I could not understand is that I could create tables, Fields and
inserting some values by coding .
I chatted with someone in web hosting company and said that he could connect
to my server. I followed all his suggestion including turning off my
firewall but so far It did not work.
I am using Window XP Profesional with sp2 , SQL Server 2000 Developer
edition . Before that I installed SQL server 2005 express edition but then I
changed to SQL server 2000 Developer edition.
What is the problem ..?.

I tried using TCP/IP connection with my local network server. It worked.
I tried using TCP/IP to create an instance of SQL server from another SQL

Yes that is the problem "SQL Server does not
exist or access denied"
I did try using DSN , Query Analyzer, SQL Server Manager and all of them
failed for remote SQL Server Instance. For local, I have no problem.
You gave me a lot of information. Since I am new to SQL Server, Let me play
around using SQL Server 2000 for a day or two or probably more. Hopefully
the information you gave will work. I did copy your answer to my notepad and
that will keep me busy for quite sometime.

I did try ping my SQL server , I received ,

What I could not understand is that I could create tables, Fields and
inserting some values by coding .
I chatted with someone in web hosting company and said that he could connect
to my server. I followed all his suggestion including turning off my
firewall but so far It did not work.
I am using Window XP Profesional with sp2 , SQL Server 2000 Developer
edition . Before that I installed SQL server 2005 express edition but then I
changed to SQL server 2000 Developer edition.
What is the problem ..?.

I tried using Query Analyzer too. It failed - same problem.
What I meant creating table by coding :
I went to the web site and use its tool for creating tables, fields and
inserting values.
I also create an ASP page and put it there in my site and read the values of
a table.
I could do that.
Perhaps What I will try next is creating an ASP NET page and put it there
and will try to create some objects on my SQL server such as tables, fields
,
etc .
I have sent an Email about my problem to my web hosting company about the
possibilty of security setting problems. But I have not got any reply from
them. I will try again to contact them. If I may, can I attach some of this
discussion and send it to them .
I tried using TCP/IP connection with my local network server. It worked.
I am not sure if it is because of the speed of the connection ' My
connection speed is about 46 Kbps .
Or perhaps my ISP problem '
My Computer - ISP - Web Hosting .
Is that any possibility the problem is with ISP ?

I am new with MS SQL Server.
I do not have any problem with my local server but has problem with remote

database and put in FTP directory for example where you can copy .BAK file

can use a SQL to SQL transfer to copy database elements, but you will need

platform access.
I would say your best bet is to havethem make a backup and place it where
you can retrieve it via FTP.

You can backup to a network drive, but I doubt that your local disks are
visible from the SQL Server machine. (And if they are, that would mean that
you need to open those drives for access, so that anyone customer of the
web host, can dump things on your disk space.)

file share to retrieve a backup file. DTS will copy a file for you, but it
uses the same windows network file mechanism that copy and xcopy use. You
can use a SQL to SQL transfer to copy database elements, but you will need
direct outside access to the SQL Service. Somehow, I doubt the hosting
company will be any more likely to grant that than they will to give
platform access.
I would say your best bet is to havethem make a backup and place it where
you can retrieve it via FTP.

You can backup to a network drive, but I doubt that your local disks are
visible from the SQL Server machine. (And if they are, that would mean that
you need to open those drives for access, so that anyone customer of the
web host, can dump things on your disk space.)

2000 server through EntMgr, and make successful selects on both remote and
local server databases via odbc.
Here's the question - Can I have a local server with some database/tables, a
remote server with some database2/tables, and make a single select statement
using table relationships from each? Without having to use DTS to make
imports/exports into the local server's database?
It seems that the connection object is specific to a server, but is there a
way to handle the reference to the remote server's database through a
database in the local server so that the connection object thinks
everything's local and can remain one-database-server-specific?
