Remotely accessing database

I'm developing a VB app to manipulate data in a table. I've created an SQL server (local) and have successfully connected to and manipulated data in a database that I created. I would like to be able to run the app on another machine and connect to the same server. I'm having trouble determining what the server name is. Tried a few things but get the "server does not exist" message. Server is set to authenticate SQL server and windows.

Is this happening because my server is (local)? If so how do I change it to permit remote access?

Any assistance would be appreciated.if you have only one sql server in that box, than the default name of the sql server is the name of the windows box. when you try to connect from another box, make sure that the client box has sql server drivers, create a DSN that point to the SQL Server box (using windows server name or ip address), every thing should go fine from there.|||C-Nag

Remote SQL WebHosting & Dreamweaver

Ok, so i am developing a site on Dreamweaver, and am looking to develop dynamic database communication.

How can i communicate with the database on this remote server? I have a custom connection string, but i dont know how to develop it locally.

Hi Callum,

The connection string should have details of where the database can be found, what username / password are needed to get access etc. So if you're developing a local version then you'll need to have a connection string for your local version and one for your production environment.

Assuming you are developing on your local machine then an OLEDB connection should look something like this:

Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;
Persist Security Info=False;
Data Source=[serverName]; (127.0.0.1)
Initial Catalog=[databaseName];
User ID=[username];
Password=[password];

Though you would also need a version of that on your production environment. To keep things simple I would keep the same logon details, so you'd only need to change the Data Source

Then cloak your Connections directory in Dreamweaver so it doesn't try to upload your connection string overwriting your production string with your development string.

Remote Connections with SQL Developers Edition

Hi,

I want to allow someone to update the data in a database being developed in SQL Developers Edition. The idea is while I'm developing the database the person who's database it is can do the data entry. The data monkey lives no where near me so I cannot keep keep updating a local copy there...

I've tried to set up and connect but the server keeps refusing the connection. So question is... can SQL Developers Edition allow remote connections... and if so, which I hope it can, whats the way to go about setting it up.

Far as I can tell I'm ok in regards to specifying the location of the server, the SQL user account is set up and has access to the database.... can anyone help.

Yes dev edition supports remote connections, you need to go into the
surface area config tool and enable them however|||

Sqlserver as back end which is
residing on Windows 2000 server. I need a best possible solution,
if this CRM app fornt end is installed in different Location and
making connection to the Sqlserver which is altogether in different site...

There is usually no problem at all using the OLEDB SQL-Server driver over
the internet if the port 1433 is not blocked by a firewall or if you are
able to setup a proxy server. The transport layer will be totally
transparent to your application.
